Thanksgiving Attitudes
November 23 is the last Sunday in the Church calendar. It is typically given the designation of "Christ the King Sunday". The long post-Pentecost season ends this week. Next Sunday - November 30 - is the beginning of a new Church year with the Advent Season. Sandwiched between Christ the King Sunday, and the First Sunday of Advent, is the celebration of Thanksgiving. My sermon this week is titled "Thanksgiving Attitudes". Gratitude is an attitude of the heart.
In our first lesson from Luke 17:11-19 - 10 lepers are healed by Jesus as he is about to enter a village. 10 are healed - 1 returns to offer thanksgiving and praise.
Our sermon text from 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 ends with these beautiful words - "Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!" Something indescribable is wonderful beyond description.
We will be looking at certain attitudes this week and how they impact our lives and those around us.
When Paul wrote to the Corinthian church, he was chiding them. The church in Jerusalem was suffering. The Corinthians, very wealthy and affluent had promised to send aid - but then faltered. Meanwhile, the Macedonian church, which was dirt poor, got excited when they heard of their neighbors zeal - and they were excited for just being allowed to take part in the offering. Are we excited about being able to take part in the offering and blessing of others?
Hilda Rusek will be spending time with Cable Hollow's children in the Children's Moments.
Also -Nettie & I are excited to be hosting Larry & Carol Sagert who are coming to us for the weekend. The Sagert's provided housing, food, and much insight into the ATEK mission work in Cusco, Peru for David & Diane Clifford, and Nettie & me last November. They will be sharing briefly during the Worship Service this Sunday, then for the Sunday School time, and then for an informal Coffee Hour at the parsonage at 6pm Sunday eve. If you'd like to come hear them at 6pm - please call, or let Nettie know so that we can plan on you.
In the Hymn - Come Ye Thankful People, Come the first verse says;
"Come, ye thankful people come;
Raise the song of harvest home;
All is safely gathered in
Ere the winter storms begin..."
Well, as I prepare to worship this Sunday with you - the winter storms have certainly begun. Still, we have the great joy and privilege of "gathering in" to love and worship God, one another, and then go out to serve the world.
Don't let the early blast of winter weather (even though winter is still officially a month away!) discourage your heart.
It's simply another season God graces us with - and it's beauty is indescribable!
Hope to see you Sunday!
With great heart,
Pastor Jon
